He said Rasch has been talking about an environmentally themed event in far northern Door for more than a year, and the opportunity came when the organization decided in January to cancel Uncork Summer. Nelson said Mickie Rasch, Door County North community coordinator, is the driving force behind the fair. It'll be kind of a lighthearted event, not the typical fair you'd see in Door County." "The concerns being expressed in today's world are being addressed at this event. "The way we think of this event is, it's truly a country fair with an ecological bent," Nelson said to the Advocate. He added a lot of vendors and exhibits will be kid-focused, including a place where children can build bat or butterfly houses or make their own winged costumes. However, Nelson doesn't expect the environmental theme to seem pushy or preachy but instead educational for guests. Tying into that, the theme of the fair is "Wings of Life."Īctivities scheduled so far include tours of the gardens at nearby Ellison Bay Beach a sale of pollinator-friendly native plants and bee-related products, including honey and honeycombs nature- and pollinator-related arts, crafts and educational tools and a featured guest speaker on the topic of pollination and its importance to our food supplies, landscapes and natural world. Exhibits will educate visitors on the importance of pollinators in ecology and the environment and the struggles many face today, notably bees, which have seen severely declining populations in recent years.
John Nelson of Door County North said vendors will offer local and sustainably produced wares as much as possible.
